Tawny Chatmon’s Gold-Kissed Children

If Tawny Chatmon’s embellished photograph masterpieces remind you of Gustav Klimt, you’re spot on. In an interview for Saatchi Art’s YouTube channel, photography artist Tawny Chatmon said she is “extremely inspired by the Austrian Secession” artists which include Klimt. Chatmon’s work is focused on celebrating black childhood. Like many people, growing up, she walked through room after room of museum exhibits barely (if at all) finding people who looked like her. As a mom of three, her work seeks to show children of color how gorgeous they are. She adorns the children in her photographs with regal gold and gem drapery and headpieces inspired by Gustav Klimt’s Golden Era.

Phyllis Stephens: Old School Brooklyn Energy

This one’s a quilt but also an art print. If you’re a city kid like me, it’ll give you walking-to-the-grocery-store-to-get-ingredients-for-dinner feels. That sun-coming-down, the-house-smells-delicious, mom’s-sending-you-out-to-get-cilantro-and-onions-for-the-tomato-sauce vibe. It’s October, just a little bit chilly, the neighborhood kids are playing, and the evening is young. You can’t watch tv ’cause it’s a school night, but you can’t wait to go home and read your Y.A. mystery: a girl’s getting threatening messages from an unknown stalker–will she find out who it is before it’s too late? She probably will, but you can’t wait to get home and find out what happens next. Ah, to be a kid in the 90’s again.
